09/01/2009 - Solidarity calls for national emergency building programme PDF Print E-mail

Solidarity National Executive member Mark Walker has called for an emergency national building programme:-

“The current extended cold spell makes such a programme an absolute necessity.”

"Tragically, thousands of our people live rough every night.  How many of us would like to be living on the streets at the moment – where the temperatures are well below freezing?"

"At the same time, thousands of building workers are on the dole, or are looking for any scrap of work they can get."

Mr. Walker continued:

“We have a crazy situation here.  We have thousands of homeless people – yet at the same time we have thousands of construction workers looking for jobs.  Why can’t we marry the two?  Surely, that’ll be a way of kick-starting the economy?"

"The homeless need shelter.  Builders need to be building.  Let’s institute a national programme now.  We need to make all empty properties habitable.  This is an emergency, so it’ll include houses and flats as well as empty office space and warehouses.”

He also outlined the huge social and economic benefits of a national emergency building programme:

“In terms of social benefits, we’ll be taking people off of the streets.  At least that’s a step in the right direction. Economically, we’ll be getting workers back to work.”

Mr. Walker concluded by calling upon the government to immediately make funds available for this project:

“Instead of bailing out greedy bankers, Gordon Brown should be getting British workers off of the scrapheap.”

Well said Mark. They can scrape up billions to bale out the banksters and to back uo our unreliable American 'allies' in Iraq and Afghanistan while many of the veterans who served out there are left with no homes to call their own. A new housing programme is just the ticket. Let's all lobby for jobs and homes for British workers.
