24/07/2009 - 300 Intel jobs to go PDF Print E-mail

Mandatory layoffs are being imposed on Intel workers in Ireland. Intel employ nearly 5,000 people in Ireland, mainly in the west Dublin commuter town of Leixlip. 300 jobs are to go.

Dell, a major customer for Intel and the world's number two maker of laptops announced in January that it would move its major European production line from Ireland to lower-wage Poland.

Unemployment in Ireland has doubled over the past year to nearly 12 per cent.

Pat Harrington, General Secretarty of Solidarity commented:-

"Irish workers face many of the same problems as us. Job cuts and closures combined with a banking crisis. They too are seeing their jobs shipped-off to low-wage economies by greedy Bosses with no national loyalties."

I must have missed this News item when it was first posted up. However, I’m glad to see this mention of support for the Irish workers at Intel. To lose 300 jobs is a shattering blow. The Irish economy is bad at the moment. This will not help it one bit.

It’s also good to see that Solidarity Trade Union supports the rights of all workers - no matter what part of the British Isles they come from.

I’m not aware of any other Trade Union that covers – or supports the workers of - the traditional nations of these Isles (Cornwall, Eire, England, the Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales and Ulster). Usually, there are separate Trade Unions that work in Eire and/or Ulster.

If Solidarity organised in Eire, I think I'm right in saying that it would be a first for the modern Trade Union movement!
